Worried Well
For those who suffer from health anxiety, any spasm can be interpreted as a signal of the onset of a terminal disease. Their worry then exacerbates any ache to the point their pain becomes real and potentially disabling. Reassurance from their doctor has little effect, as the individual begins to doubt the physician’s conclusion that they are perfectly healthy, yet their suffering is genuine, especially as Internet sources pour fuel on their own interpretations.
When a person compulsively participates in an activity such as gambling, sex, shopping, or ingesting substances like alcohol, cocaine, or nicotine, they have an addiction that, at first, can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, health, and personal relationships. These individuals may not even be aware that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others.
Couples Counseling
Kevin offers support to Couples in relationships who may be considering a separation or possibly seeking to strengthen their intimacy and understanding. They may be experiencing a power struggle, communications issues, or infidelity. During these counseling sessions, the relationship is the focus, although self-improvement and self-awareness are also expected. Successful outcomes often depend on the couple's motivation & dedication.
Most people experience a traumatic event sometime in their lives. It can be a car accident or the sudden death of a loved one. It might be abuse or neglect, or a violent criminal act. Some are exposed to war, or have experienced a natural disaster. Often, the effects of trauma are lasting, causing a person to live with deep emotional pain, fear and confusion, long after the event has passed. Kevin provides the support and guidance essential to healing from trauma and PTSD.
Grief, Loss, and Bereavement
Bereavement typically refers to the process of recovering from the death of someone close to you. Grief is more a reaction to any type of loss, but both present a range of feelings from deep sadness to anger. The process of adapting to a significant loss is extremely unique as everyone experiences it in their own way and in their own time. Kevin can help those whose thoughts, behaviors, or feelings become distressing by sharing effective ways to cope.
Even the healthiest of families can experience Oscar-level drama, from small irritations to buried resentments, from petty arguments to feelings of guilt and disappointment, all exposing an anger we did not even know we had. Our families can present the most intense emotions we experience. Working with Kevin, families can expect to understand one another better as they learn to communicate more effectively and proactively work to disrupt unhealthy patterns.
Overcoming Guilt & Shame
Shame is the experience of feeling unworthy, bad, or wrong, and can be extremely uncomfortable. Guilt is an unpleasant feeling of remorse or sadness regarding a past action.
We sometimes learn things about ourselves or others we would like to overlook or ignore. Unfortunately, some of those things left unchecked can cause problems. Self-Mastery skills help us to take control of unchecked problems. We then become free to honor, accept, and value who we are becoming by exercising self-control. This is the hallmark of obtaining self-mastery skills.
Anxiety Management
Troubling situations can sometimes be tricky, even for the best of us. We don’t always know how problems occur or what is lurking around the corner. The distress caused by anxiety provoking problems is a real concern. Thankfully, how to manage distress is a skill that can be learned by nearly anyone. AGL Counseling has ready-to-use tools on how to lower or manage runaway anxiety and the trauma caused by distressing situations.
Emotion Regulation
Emotions are mostly uncontrolled responses to current life circumstances and are part of the human condition. Emotions have a way of either helping or hurting our life experiences. The good news is we all can learn ways to absorb hurts or adapt ourselves to highly charged situations without having emotional meltdowns getting in the way of living a greater life.
